NewOrleans+Americorps+Awesome

My name is Bill.

I just moved to New Orleans. I took a year long position through the Digital Arts Service Corps at the Community Center of St Bernard Parish. I'm pretty excited.

I'm also a project based artist, here are some projects I have done/am doing.

send me a postcard:

Before my Americorps service starts I had to run through these tutorials online to make sure I understand whats expected of me. The pic above is from the website that taught me different things inside different buildings. Below are some interesting facts I pulled.I can’t do any outside work for extra cash. Including playing gigs with a band, one-time work like mowing someone’s yard, or selling crafts I made. (stuffed robots!!)I can’t engage in voter registration, provide voter transportation to the polls, or solicit monetary contributions for a political candidate.I can’t provide religious instruction or conduct worship services, or ask people to participate in activities related to my religion.

These snowcones, or snowballs as they are called here, were delicious. They were made with shaved ice instead of just crushed hard unpleasant stuff that I’m use to. They were also served in cups, not paper cones that disintegrate halfway through your eating process. I got Bananas Foster with Condensed Milk - so good. We got them from a place called Pandoras.

Some Elsewhere friends came to stay for the weekend at our place in N.O. while on Tipi tour. Tipi tour, or Polymorphic Plastic Parade, is a traveling art exhibit of tipis made from recycled materials and bamboo. They set up in City Park and at a gallery in the Bywater called The Front. Jess and I helped them set up some of the tipis in the park. It was really hot. New Orleans is really hot.

Last week I went to a kickball game that a bunch of my nashville friends are on. It was a pretty good time. I hope I can get in on something like this in New Orleans.

This is the second New Orleans/Brooklyn combo I’ve found while looking around for new orleans art on the interweb. This project was called ‘Your Neighbors steps’ and the artist did two pieces, one in Brooklyn and one in N.O. The other was an event a N.O. t-shirt printing company I like put on called Brooklynola. My brother, sister-in-law, neice, and one of my best friends live in brooklyn. Maybe we will be closer then I thought…

I just descovered a place called The Front in NO, that looks incredable. At least the artists there have real nice work after looking at the website. I especially like Kyle Bravo and Jenny LeBlanc’s work. Above is some images from their printstallation ‘Snowball’ - a video of the peice can be seen here. I also really like their peice ‘faceoff’. I really love the performance/print combo. I have day dreams of jess and I making work like this.

I hope this installation is still up and happening when I get to new orleans. Its called “The Apostolic Project” and was done in partnership with AORTA which has been helping out with a bunch of site specific artwork in New Orleans since 06. A good video of the piece here.
