I just moved to New Orleans. I took a year long position through the Digital Arts Service Corps at the Community Center of St Bernard Parish. I'm pretty excited.

So the most popular service that we provide at the Community Center where I work, is our food pantry. For the past 2 years the govt has given Louisiana food banks 5 mil to make sure the shelves were stocked post Katrina and during the recession. This year the Jindal administration cut it back 90% to just 500 K. As a result our food pantry has been giving out less and less food every week. I started a blog to kind of document our situation. November is American Indian and Alaska Native heritage month. I made an infographic in celebration of a culture that I sadly know almost nothing about. Full pdf here.
I had never even heard of MREs(Meals, ready to eat) before working in a food pantry, but apparently these things were given out like crazy after hurricane katrina. They are these air tight meals that are usually issued to people in the military because they basically don’t have an expiration date. They also come with this green bag that heats up almost instantly with just a little bit of water. The whole thing is very astronaut/space like. Especially the starwars font on the peanut butter.

I have dreamed of this day, and it has come at last. All 100 Mellowtrons have now found new homes. Thank you anyone that adopted a Mellowtron, or just supported us throughout this project. I hope everybody is happy with their mellow robot and keep a lookout for Roxybot, she will be dancing onto the scene very soon…
Most of all the news that I have seen in New Orleans about St. Bernard usually ends up insinuating that people who live in the parish are racists. I decided to look up the demographics of the parish, and other parishes in Louisiana to see exactly the difference in population, and if that difference was abnormal. I showed my supervisor some of the data-pictures I made and she had me make a general visual for the center as a whole. She sent this off to the Brown Foundation which is considering the Community Center for a grant. Full pdf.
